Players Championship 24: James Wade beats Dave Chisnall 8-6 in the final to win fifth title of 2019

James Wade won his fifth title of 2019 after beating Dave Chisnall 8-6 in the final of Players Championship 24 in Barnsley on Wednesday.

The world number eight, who won three Players Championship titles in April, and another one in June, picked up his fifth tournament win of the season yesterday.

“It was a nerve-wracking final,” Wade admitted.

“I thought I was going to have it over and done with a lot quicker than I did but it’s onwards and upwards from here.”

Wade began the day with wins over Marko Kantele, Jonathan Worsley and James Richardson, before his best performance came in the last 16, averaging 105 in a 6-3 win against Raymond van Barneveld.

The reigning European and World Series Finals champion then edged past Jermaine Wattimena 6-5 in the quarter-finals, before ending Scott Taylor’s run in the last four, winning 7-3.

Taylor entered the 128-player tournament as a late replacement for world number one Michael van Gerwen, who had withdrawn.

The second day of the mid-week Pro Tour double-header also saw John Henderson hit a nine-dart finish in his last 16 victory over Ron Meulenkamp.
