Leighton Bennett thrilled to become youngest winner of the BDO World Youth Championship at 13-years-old

Leighton Bennett says it is ‘a massive dream come true’ to have won the BDO World Youth Championship at Lakeside.

The 13-year-old, who rose to fame after winning the Cambridgeshire Open last year, defeated 2017 runner-up Nathan Girvan 3-0 to become the youngest winner of the BDO’s leading youth title.

The Lincolnshire teen clinched the title in style with a 121 checkout on the bullseye, as his stock continues to rise, finishing with an 88 average.

“It’s absolutely awesome,” Bennett said. “Just winning this, it’s a massive dream come true.

“When it went in (the bullseye) all the emotions just fell straight away and I just had to celebrate that victory, because it’s a world title.

“It’s my dream to do this and I was just thinking about it all last night, just play your game and enjoy it.”

Bennett, who is sponsored by Target, had the support of former PDC world champion Rob Cross in the crowd at Lakeside.

“Once I got sponsored by Target I met him,” he said. “He’s a top bloke. He spoke to me all day and made me feel really comfortable.

“Ever since that he’s been getting involved, texting me. He’s been a really big help.”

Bennett, who has only been playing competitive darts for two years, is now setting his sights on a place in the England youth team and also wants to win the JDC World Youth Championship.
