Number one seed Lorraine Winstanley kicked off her latest campaign to become world champion with a 2-1 win against Casey Gallagher in the first round.
The former World Masters winner came through a nervy affair by clinching the deciding set 3-0, and will now face 10-time world champion Trina Gulliver in the quarter-finals.
“I’m happy with the win, but I’m not happy with the performance,” she said. “I’m glad to come out the right side of the result.
“I came out after the break knowing that I had to dig in. If I didn’t, I knew Casey would take it away from me.
“In the second set I sort of felt it was going my way, I don’t really know what happened. I was probably trying a little too hard to try and get over the finishing line.”
Winstanley is making her ninth appearance at the BDO World Championship this week, but this is the first time that she has been the top seed, which brings added pressure.
“Of course it brings pressure,” she said. “But it’s my ambition to win this tournament.
“I’ve said it right from the first time I qualified, my ambition is to become world champion.
“I’m not going to say this year, next year or the year after, at some point it will happen.
“Nobody likes the first round. It was a difficult draw for me as Casey performed so well at the Winmau (World Masters) and smashed me.
“I feel a little bit more comfortable now, but you can’t be comfortable.”
