BDO World Championship to be held at the Indigo at the O2 in 2020 as the BDO end 34-year stay at the Lakeside

The British Darts Organisation has announced that their 2020 World Championship will be held at the Indigo at the O2, in London, thus ending the tournament’s 34-year run at the famous Lakeside Country Club.

The BDO World Championship has been staged at the Lakeside every year since 1986, having previously been held at the Heart of the Midlands Club (1978) and Jollees (1979-1985).

But next year’s event, which will be the 43rd running of the BDO’s biggest tournament, will see a new venue used, as it switches over to the Indigo at the O2.

A statement on the BDO website read: ‘After four decades of this prestigious competition residing at The Lakeside, we are excited to announce that the new home of the BDO World Professional Darts Championships is Indigo at the O2, London!

‘We have such fond memories and are extremely grateful to The Lakeside, especially Bob & Barbara Potter and all that have helped over the years to make the most famous darts tournament in the world, such a success.

‘Moving to The O2, the most popular venue in the world, is an amazing opportunity and we look forward to working with the O2 and their partners over the coming years to develop a new future for the BDO World Professional Darts Championships.’

The news comes just a day after the BDO also revealed a new home for the World Masters, which is now sponsored by One80 L-Style, at the Circus Tavern, a venue which held the PDC’s World Championship between 1994 and 2007. The non-televised stages are to take place at the Civic Hall, in Grays.
